Glossary of Terms
Here is a list of terms common terms used on the web, with a description of what they mean.
- Browser
- Software which runs on a computer or mobile device, allowing the user to view web pages.
- Content Management System (CMS)
- Software which usually runs on a web server, and lets you log in and edit the content of your website.
- Domain Names
- An easy-to-remember address for a website, such as example.com
- E-Commerce
- Allowing customers to buy products or services over the internet.
- Messages sent electronically over the internet.
- Email Client
- The software you use to access your email, such as Outlook or Thunderbird.
- Hosting
- A service providing space on a web server for your website.
- HTML
- A simple computer mark-up language used on the web to allow formatting of documents, and linking between them.
- Search Engine
- Software which scans and indexes other websites, so that users can search for keywords and find relevant information.
- Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)
- Techniques used to try and make a website rank more highly in search engines, usually for marketing purposes.
- Server
- A computer connected to the internet or a private network, used to store files or websites.
- XHTML
- A stricter, cleaner version of HTML, where the quality of the code can more easily be validated.
- XML
- A simple computer mark-up language used to store or communicate information, often over the internet.
